Chapter Twelve

He’d watched them. Alisha and that stranger. Jared Murdock. An interesting man, that one. Rich and powerful. Good-looking, too. The kind of man a woman would just naturally turn to. Would Alisha run off with Jared Murdock? She might, if Murdock kept sniffing around, taking her on long walks, having nice, intimate meals with her.

He’d thought Murdock would be gone by now. But everyone in town was talking about the man as if he were some sort of saint. Said he’d come up here to get away from the city, to fish and do some hiking and mountain climbing, but now he was doing more than that. He was being so helpful, so nice. Said Jared Murdock had made quite an impression on the villagers.

Even though some of the villagers had made it plain they didn’t trust outsiders.

He’d given the man ample enough hints, hadn’t he? First, the break-in, then the azalea on the table. What more did the man need to know he wasn’t welcome here?

“He doesn’t scare easily,” a friend had told him.

“We’ll just see about that.” He’d met that kind before. Had seen ’em come and go on this old mountain. They thought they could just traipse around like they owned the place, throw their money around, then leave. Everyone always left anyway. He knew that from personal experience, didn’t he?

He had to make Jared leave, one way or another. Had to get the man out of the picture. If not, all his plans for Alisha would be for nothing. Nothing.

And nothing was what he had right now. He wanted more. He wanted it all to be the way he dreamed about it being. He wanted to take Alisha and get off this mountain. Take Alisha and that big bank account she was trying so hard to hide.

He took another sip from the bottle he carried, then turned to sneak back up the path. He’d watched and waited, and bided his time last night. Everything was all set to get rid of Murdock once and for all—one more scare, this one more intent, more damaging.

Murdock shouldn’t have shown up at Alisha’s house again. He’d seen Geneva motioning to Alisha. He’d watched as Alisha and Murdock had hurried back down the footpath to her cabin. That meant Murdock would be occupied for a while at least.

But soon, that aggravating man would be gone.

Tonight, he’d make his next move.
